Bruno the Movie

I decided to go out with a friend yesterday to see the highly anticipated (for me anyway) movie Bruno, starring Sacha Baron Cohen. Of the three characters Cohen is known for, I have to admit I like Bruno the least. Ali G was just hella funny when conducting interviews, but there was never a “deeper point” to his character than pure entertainment. Borat on the other hand was not only just funny, but was also effective at getting out the true colors of certain people. (Like making republican James Broadwater admit he thought all Jews would go to hell)

In the Ali G show I can’t remember Bruno for anything but mocking the fascion industry (which is fine by me of course :p) so I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that he could come up with enough material for this character to make a movie that was, in my opinion, entertaining for the entirety of its duration.

He goes after the fascion industry and other rather shallow parts of our culture in the movie too, of course. For example, he interviews parents who are so desperate to make money off of their children, that they say they are willing to let them undergo liposuctions and operate heavy machinery. (This was one of the few parts of the movie where the entire theatre audience, including me, held their breath.) He also goes after homophobia and religious intelerance in the US of course, and I particularly liked it when he bumped into members of Fred Phelp’s congretaion, tied half-naked to another man. It all ends well of course, he somehow managed to get Elton John and Sting, among others, to make a song for peace and tolerance, which was a suitable ending to the movie.

Without spoiling anything more I can say that I liked this move, and found it pretty much on par with the Borat movie of three years ago. Recommended.

Shalom!

So I decided to start blogging again. Having and maintaining a website took its toll on my free time (and on my patience and willingness to update) so hopefully I will be able to update more often in this format.

Of all the free blogging services I checked out, WordPress seemed to have the most useful features, in fact I was a little surprised this was not a paid service. I will keep links to featured posts as it were, in the sidebar for easy access, pretty much as I had on my original website.
